This Week on Asia Report:

  • Indonesia: Government urged to respect Ahmadiyah rights -- A series of attacks on followers of the Ahmadiyah religious sect has once again drawn criticism, with an expert in religion and democracy urging the government to exercise its authority when there are violations of human rights.
  • Cambodia: Homes leveled in shock eviction -- More than 20 families from Phnom Penh’s Russey Keo district had their homes destroyed by police and government workers driving excavators and wielding axes in an eviction on Chroy Changvar peninsula Thursday morning.
  • Cambodia: National Assembly reopens debate on Demonstration Law -- The debate on the government’s controversial Law on Nonviolent Demonstrations reopened during a session of the National Assembly on Monday, with opposition lawmakers again expressing concerns the law could be used to stifle freedom of expression for peaceful demonstrators.
  • Asian drug users unite to form regional organization -- Over twenty-five drug users from nine different countries met in Bangkok on 16th and 17th October 2009 to finalize the Asian Network of People who Use Drugs (ANPUD) Constitution and elect a Steering Committee for the first regional network of people who use drugs. Based on the principles of Meaningful Involvement of People who Use Drugs (MIPUD), ANPUD has been setup by people who use drugs to advocate for the rights and unify the voices of their communities across Asia. ANPUD has over 150 members throughout the Asia region who are collaborating to influence decisions that affect their lives.
